What is a Clinical Psychologist?

A Clinical Psychologist is someone who has trained at University for a minimum of 6 years in the assessment and treatment of psychological problems. They are trained to use evidence-based research and psychological theory to assess and intervene with difficulties in an individually- tailored way. Psychological change requires the collaboration of the client and the treatment time varies depending on severity of the problem/s and individual motivation to change.

Why do people see Clinical Psychologists?
People seek help from Clinical Psychologists for many different reasons. Clients are often seeking a safe space to tell their story and to be listened to in a non-judgemental setting. Most clients are also seeking help & support for active change in their thinking and behaviour. I have extensive experience in assessing and treating people covering a wide range of presenting problems, for example:

  • Eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, non-clinical eating difficulties, weight management)

  • Anxiety (panic attacks, phobias, social anxiety, excessive worry, obsessive-compulsive behaviours)

  • Depression and low mood

  • Low self-esteem and lack of confidence

  • Relationship/family difficulties

  • Deliberate self-harm

  • Addictions

  • Parenting skills
